Qualcomm following MediaTek’s footsteps : First Deca-Core Snapdragon 818 SoC said to be in works
The first ever octa-core processor to be introduced in the market was by MediaTek, the first chip maker. Though the competition made fun of this initiative, Qualcomm soon followed MediaTek’s footsteps and announced its own octa-core application processors.
MediaTek recently though came out with the MT6797 SoC, which is part of the Helio X20 series and comes fitted with a deca-core CPU. The silicone piece is build out of four ARM 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores, four 2GHz ARM Cortex-A57 cores, and two 2.5GHz ARM Cortex-A72 cores.
It also has support for LTE Cat-6 and 993MHz LPDDR3 RAM, which is less in standard in comparison to Qualcomm’s and Snapdragon’s support for 1600 MHz LPDDR4 RAM, and the former’s support for LTE Cat-9.
It seems like once again Qualcomm is planning to follow the footsteps of MediaTek, and release its own deca-core system-on-chip.
Qualcomm is engaged in making a new chip called the Snapdragon 818, which will probably be a deca-core CPU, reports STJSGadgets.
The chip will depend on four low-power cores of the 1.2GHz Cortex-A53 variety, two middle-range 1.6GHz Cortex-A53 cores, plus four high-power cores of the 2.0GHz Cortex A72 type.
The Snapdragon 818 supports LPDDR4 RAM and also takes benefit of Adreno 532 GPU. It will be able to manage LTE Cat-10 speeds once released. Lastly, the chip is built using 20nm process technology.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 818 SoC as one can see looks to be getting less clock speed than one is getting with MedaTek’s new chip. There are chances that the details may change as the silicone comes near its official launch.
Where Qualcomm is preparing itself to launch the Snapdragon 820 with its own Kyro cores, on the other hand, the company is not yet prepared to fully formally declare the services of ARM.
All these informations should be taken with a pinch of salt. One knows for a fact that Qualcomm is getting ready to launch the Snapdragon 820, as the company itself has confirmed the existence of this piece of silicone. However, nothing was mentioned about the Snapdragon 818. Hence, one has to wait till the company makes an official announcement and not make a closure considering that this is actually a reasonable piece of information.
